ASID Sunday Workshops
Date: Sunday 29 March 2009
Venue: Cypress Lakes Resort, Pokolbin, Hunter Valley
Time: 8:00am – 1:30pm
Delegates have the opportunity to participate in two interactive and case based post-ASID Annual Scientific Meeting workshops utilizing the expertise of our international guest speakers, Professor Eduardo Gottuzzo and Dr. Andreas Voss.
1. International, travel and refugee health
The planned workshop will focus on the following topics:
- Opportunities and careers in international health - With the growth in interest in so-called Neglected Tropical Diseases, and the entry of funders such as the Global Fund for AIDS TB and malaria and the Gates Foundation, there is a growing opportunity for those with skills in Infectious Diseases, Public Health and Microbiology to become involved in International Health projects at a number of levels. These include Relief Work, Research, Program Management and Service Delivery. In this session a range of speakers from around Australia and overseas will present brief outlines of such opportunities.
- Refugee Health - Australia resettles over 13,000 humanitarian refugees each year and as a consequence, infectious diseases specialists and other health care providers are increasingly faced with clinical scenarios with which they may be relatively unfamiliar. This session will focus on core and controversial infectious disease issues in both children and adults, using real-life case presentations facilitated by those with some expertise in the field and involving lots of discussion from the floor. Registrants will be invited to submit suitable (and difficult!) cases for discussion. We will also be discussing the recently completed ASID guidelines on post-arrival screening of refugees, including their controversies and uncertainties.
- Post-Travel infection - This session will use travel-related scenarios to generate discussion of interesting and emerging issues related to pre-travel and post-travel health. It will include case presentations of infections among unwell returned travellers which raise practical management issues for physicians in Australia.
2. Healthcare infection
The Healthcare infection workshop, jointly sponsored by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare, the Australian Infection Control Association and the Healthcare Infection Control Special Interest group of ASID will be attended by the ASID 2009 keynote speaker, Dr Andreas Voss, speaking about the successful Dutch approaches to MRSA control. Local speakers will review standard and controversial aspects of MRSA and other multi-resistant organism infection control management in a manner that will maximise audience participation and development of consensus.
