In this Finnish trial children 6 months to 35 months age with acute otitis media were randomised to receive amoxycillin-clavulanate or placebo. Children in the antibiotic group experienced significant less treatment failures compared to the placebo group. As expected, children treated with antibiotics had more side effects (diarrhoea) but these were mild. There is clear benefit in using antibiotics for children with acute otitis media.
